After a long career as a book publisher in the United States, Steven Cary sold his publishing business in 2000 to devote himself full-time to painting. As a 20 year resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico, one of the largest art centers in the U.S., he had the opportunity to study drawing and painting with a number of accomplished artists, most notably Kevin Gorges, former professor of drawing and painting at the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy. In 2004 he decided to relocate to Mexico, which he had visited many times in the 1980s and 1990s. He first lived for two years in the colonial city of Oaxaca, which is one of the centers of indigenous culture in Mexico. The city also has a lively contemporary art scene. At the end of 2006 he relocated to San Miguel de Allende and now exhibits his paintings in the Galerķa Izamal. Cary's unique style utilizes classical techniques to express contemporary imagery with his favorite subject being the human form. His style can be boldly graphic and occasionally highly realistic. He paints with acrylics and oils, sometimes combining them by layering oil glazes over acrylic bases.
Cary's work can be found in private collections in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico City, New York City, Boston, Atlanta, Dallas, Austin, Phoenix, Santa Fe, Denver and San Francisco, among other locations. Contact
