Javier Garcia

New York, New York. Young San Miguel painter Javier Garcia loves it. During one of his stays there he met the wife of U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan when she opened an exhibit of children's art at the U.N. lobby. (Garcia coordinated the Mexican children's section). "It was a great time. I had no money, and I had to work to live." He painted on streets and bridges and sold his work on the street. He painted a mural in a Mexican restaurant next to Prospect Park in Brooklyn. The painting shows the ancient Aztecs arriving in current-day New York, symbolic of the many Mexican immigrants to the city. He also painted murals in private homes in the city and in New Jersey.

Garcia's work is vigorous, colorful and wide-ranging in subject and style. He paints bright and energetic street scenes, landscapes with figures and spontaneous semi-abstract pieces in which the influence of New York abstract-expressionism is clear. Born and raised in San Miguel he speaks English and has made many friends in the English-speaking community here. He studied at Bellas Artes and with Roz Farbush, among others. His work has been shown in Puerta Vallarta and can also be seen Galería San Miguel on the Jardín.
