Henry Vermillion

Henry Vermillion was born in El Paso, Texas, and studied drawing, literature and biology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. He lived and worked for twenty years in Raleigh, NC. He has won awards at the Henly Spectrum Annual Competition in Winston-Salem, NC, the Rocky Mount Arts Center (Best in Show), The Raleigh First Arts Competition, the North Carolina Watercolor Society, and others. He executed a 200-square foot sports mural in 1986 for the exercise facility at Northern Telecom Corporation, Research Triangle Park, NC, and was selected to do a watercolor painting for reproduction as a poster for the U.S. Olympic Sports Festival in Durham, NC, in 1987. In 1983, his work was selected for the NC Artists Annual Exhibition at the NC State Museum of Art in Raleigh. He has had one-person shows at the Danville (VA) Museum of Art and History, at Betsy Brennan's Art Placement (Raleigh, NC), Marita Gilliam (Raleigh), and has shown in person and group exhibitions in Mexico at Galeria Eugenia, Galeria Izamal, The Instituto Allende, Galeria Atenea, and Galeria San Miguel, all in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where he and his wife Britt Zaist have lived since 1991. He has shown also in Monterrey, Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

For five years, he was president of the Wake Visual Arts Association in Raleigh, NC, a 300-member art cooperative. In 1989, he was awarded the prestigious "Raleigh Medal of the Arts" for visual arts by the City of Raleigh. His art criticism has appeared in newspapers in the Southeastern U.S. and in Atencion San Miguel. He is a co-owner of Galeria Izamal, Mesones 80, San Miguel, where his work may be seen.
